Dementia Awareness

This is one of our new half day courses, specifically designed due to several client requests. It is aimed at Health Care Professionals who deal with individuals who have, or may be susceptible to Dementia. It is also suitable for those studying for a health care qualification, or those who have regular contact with a Dementia patient.

Dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.

Course Content

After the course introduction and welcome, the main body of the course includes a theory presentation on Dementia. This covers the causes, types and potential progression of Dementia. The presentation also assists the candidate in recognising and, more importantly, understanding dementia in individuals. There is also input on how to assist dementia sufferers and how to deal with your own personal issues if you care for a Dementia sufferer.

Practical Session

There is also a practical session, where each candidate can be provided (if they wish) with sensory and physical mobility deprivation equipment, so they can experience what it’s like to have Dementia. The Candidate will be provided with this equipment, and then set a series of five simple tasks which must be done within twelve minutes, folding towels, setting a table etc. This will enable them better identify with the sufferers day-to-day struggles, thereby improving their ability to provide care.

We may ask permission from the individual to video their practical session. If the individual is videoed, this may be played back after the individual has completed the tasks required, (subject to approval from the candidate) to enable them to witness their actions. To comply with Data Protection Regulations all video data is deleted and will not be reproduced in any form, unless written permission is requested and gained from the individual.

This course costs £40.00 per person including VAT or we can deliver this course for £200.00 including VAT for a maximum of twelve attendees.
